Wendy mentioned to me that as several folks on this list are interested in adopting an IG from the Italian Greyhound Club of America (IGCA) Rescue. She astutely suggested that I put some more information on our adoption process on this list for those to whom it is of interest. I also realized in our e-conversation and from some inquires on IG Post that it might be helpful for me to discuss the different purposes of a play group or meetup vs. the adoption process.

As a preamble, while IGCA provides forms and guidelines, each rep operates in a slightly different way that helps them make the best match for the home and for the dog. So, while the application form is IGCA's the letter is mine, as are these thoughts and reflections.

I will be happy to answer any question you have and as time permits I'll expand on this topic with different categories. For now, I have added to the Files section of this meetup the basic letter I send to folks who write to me asking about adopting. I know several of you have received it already! It gives information about IGs and outlines the adoption process. Many people do their research after getting this letter and decide an IG is not for them. The application process really starts for me when I receive the application form that Wendy has already posted. Then we go through the steps outlined in the letter.

The play groups are not necessarily a function of Rescue, although the reps are usually involved. For me, the major purpose of such groups is build a community of IG fanciers--so we can share information about IG resources, arrange individual play dates and often dog sitting, help socialize our dogs, and give them a fun place to play. Sometimes Rescue is lucky enough to find volunteers like Wendy and her husband who are willing to go above and beyond and open and open their home for a play date/fundraiser to help our Rescue--that combines fun and some is, I hope, a way for our local IG community to bond together to help the rescued IGs as much as we can.

Play groups are also a huge help to Rescue. It is so wonderful for potential adopters to be able to meet a lot of IGs and talk to the people who really know them. That way, potential adopters don't just have to take my word for things. I will always bring adoptable fosters to play dates, but these are not "adoption events" per se. I love for everyone to meet the fosters and hope that you will fall in love with them. However, many of our fosters go directly to waiting homes and may never be at a play date or even on the Web site. So, if you are interested in adopting, the application is the first step.

I'll post more as time permits--I have to do that pesky work-for-money thing right now. Please feel free to ask questions.

The currently adoptable fosters are posted at http://www.igcarescue... although Cooper now has a forever home.

Cheers,
Alice
